Velux Skylight FAQ

Venting vs. Fixed Skylights

Q: What is a solar-powered venting (operable) skylight, and how is it different from a fixed skylight?

A: A solar-powered venting skylight (often referred to as a “fresh air” skylight) can open and close, while a fixed skylight stays sealed. Venting models have a small solar panel and built-in battery, so no wiring is required. They provide natural light and improve ventilation, which reduces heat and humidity. A built-in rain sensor automatically closes the skylight when it starts to rain. Both fixed and venting skylights use factory-applied seals, flashing, and underlayment for watertight installation. Venting models are controlled by a remote or wall switch and continue charging even on cloudy days.

Q: I mainly want more natural light. Should I choose a fixed skylight or a venting one?

A: Fixed skylights deliver bright daylight. However, venting skylights give the same light plus the ability to release heat and moisture, which can make a noticeable difference in kitchens, bathrooms, or any room that tends to get warm or humid. Airflow adds comfort without extra effort. Venting models can also be operated while open, as they will close automatically when rain is detected.

Installation & Performance

Q: Will an operable skylight leak when it rains?

A: No. Both fixed and venting skylights are designed to be watertight when properly installed. They include integrated flashing, seals, and underlayment. Venting models also have a rain sensor that closes the skylight at the first sign of rain.

Q: Do solar-powered skylights require electrical wiring in my home?

A: No. A roof-mounted solar panel charges an internal battery, so no home wiring is needed. Skylights are controlled by a remote or wall switch, and the panel charges even in cloudy weather. This simplifies installation compared to a wired system.

Q: Are solar venting skylights more expensive than fixed skylights?

A: They cost more upfront, but they provide fresh air and help reduce indoor heat and energy use. Since they’re self-powered, there’s no electrical installation, which simplifies installation and avoids the need for an electrician.

Shades & Light Control

Q: Can I install shades on a fixed skylight to control daylight?

A: Yes. Fixed skylights can be fitted with motorized or solar-powered shades. These shades reduce light, glare, and heat. They operate using their own solar cell and do not require wiring. They can be used for full or partial room darkening.

Q: How do solar-powered shades improve energy efficiency?

A: Shades limit heat entering through the skylight during peak sunlight hours. According to VELUX, certain room-darkening solar shades can improve energy performance by up to 45%, reducing cooling costs while running on solar power.

Upgrading & Next Steps

Q: What if I just want to replace my old skylight with the same type?

A: That’s always an option. However, skylights older than about 10 years may have different glass coatings, frame strength, and energy performance compared to newer models. Upgrading to a venting model adds ventilation along with natural light for a small additional cost.

Q: How do I schedule an inspection or consultation?
