VELUX Sustainability Strategy: Building a Greener Future

Sustainable building solutions begin long before the finished product reaches a home. The materials it is made from, the energy used in production, the amount of waste generated, and the resources conserved at each stage all matter.

In sunny Southern California, skylights bring daylight into parts of the home that conventional windows cannot adequately illuminate. VELUX’s approach to sustainability considers how a product is made and its environmental impact throughout its entire life cycle.

VELUX Sustainability: From Raw Materials to the Finished Product

VELUX’s approach to sustainability includes emissions reduction, responsible resource use, sustainable materials, waste reduction, and safe working conditions. These priorities are reflected in four main areas: Energy and Climate, Zero-Waste Production, Sustainable Sourcing, and a Safe, Healthy Workplace.

The company considers a product’s environmental impact at each stage, from raw material sourcing and production to use and disposal.

Less Carbon Starts with Materials

VELUX’s global strategy addresses emissions across its product value chain. By 2030, the company aims to reduce emissions from its own operations and energy consumption compared with 2020 levels, and to reduce its carbon footprint across the product value chain by 25%.

Material choices are part of this effort. Skylight components include glass, composite materials, and aluminum with 50% recycled content.

Responsible Use of Materials

At VELUX production facilities, laser scanning helps optimize wood cutting and reduce waste. Wood offcuts and chips are recycled or used for heating. In skylight production, 97% of material waste is recycled.

Sustainability Continues After Production

For the company, sustainability continues beyond production. Many VELUX skylights last up to 30 years, and every product has an EPD environmental declaration that reflects its environmental impact throughout its life cycle.

Packaging is another area of focus: more than 90% of the packaging for VELUX Modular Skylights is made from recyclable cardboard.

VELUX’s approach to sustainability spans the entire product life cycle, from responsible material selection and production to long-term use and waste reduction.
